Everyone wants the peace of mind knowing their hard-earned money is safe and secure. That’s the whole point behind deposit insurance from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which enables you to place your investments with confidence at FDIC-insured financial institutions across the country without worrying about the unlikely event of a bank failure. FDIC insurance is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government, so you can rest assured that your portfolio is protected from any “what ifs” that may come along.

What does FDIC insurance cover and how much?

FDIC insurance covers all kinds of deposits held at an insured bank. These include checking accounts, savings accounts, money market accounts, certificates of deposit (CDs), market-linked deposit CDs, and other deposit accounts. Also insured are official items issued by an insured bank, such as cashier’s checks and money orders. FDIC insurance covers these accounts dollar-for-dollar up to $250,000 per eligible account, including the principal and any accrued interest through the date of the insured bank’s failure.

What is not covered by FDIC insurance?

The following are not covered by FDIC insurance even when purchased at a federally insured bank:

  • Stocks
  • Bonds
  • Mutual funds
  • Life insurance policies
  • Municipal securities
  • Annuities
  • S. Treasury bills, bonds, or notes
  • Safe deposit boxes and their contents

When and how is FDIC insurance paid?

FDIC insurance is paid when an insured bank fails, however unlikely that may be. If it does happen, the bank’s chartering authority will typically step in to close the bank and bring in the FDIC. FDIC staff would be on location the day the bank fails, working diligently to identify all insured accounts. In many cases, another bank would agree to buy the failing bank, which would help create a smooth transition for depositors. If there is no buyer, the FDIC will maintain access for depositors to their insured deposits.
